The Wyoming Land Trust is a private, nonprofit organization that works with landowners to conserve Wyoming’s agricultural and natural resources.

We were founded in 2000 as the Green River Valley Land Trust by a group of ranchers, teachers and local business owners in Sublette County who wanted to provide landowners—particularly working ranchers—with a voluntary way to conserve their land and the wildlife habitat and agricultural heritage it provides. In 2010, the Green River Valley Land Trust became the Wyoming Land Trust in order to provide its services to landowners across the state.

We have a 16-member statewide board of directors, an 11-member Advisory Board, and 5 full-time staff. The Board makes policy decisions and sets the organization’s strategic course, the Advisory Board offers its business and financial savvy, and the staff carries out our day-to-day work to achieve our mission.

In 10 years, we have worked with more than 47 families to conserve nearly 30,000 acres of working ranchland, wildlife habitats and scenic views in Wyoming. This puts our organization in the top 100 land trusts in the country in terms of acreage conserved.

We’re also one of the first accredited land trusts in the country and the first accredited land trust in Wyoming. Accreditation recognizes organizations for meeting national standards for excellence, upholding the public trust and ensuring that conservation efforts are permanent. Our organization exists to serve landowners. We’re not an advocacy group, and we’re not an environmental group. Our board and staff live and work in Wyoming and use voluntary, market-based tools like conservation easements to help landowners achieve their goals. The Wyoming Land Trust values honesty, integrity, hard work, trust, conservatism, common sense, innovation, simplicity, reliability, and efficiency.
